Only Sutter?
This is a bit mind boggling. How is it that only Bruce Sutter gets elected to the Hall of Fame this year? Compare him head-to-head with Lee Smith, and explain to me why Sutter is in and Smith is not. Keep this in mind, too: The Cubs traded Sutter when they knew they had Lee Smith coming. Kudos for voting Bruce in, but a serious “Wag of the Finger” (thanks Stephen Colbert) for not putting at least Smith, Gossage, Rice & Dawson in as well.
You can see the story on mlb.com right here.
There’s a few things I should note from the voting results:
- Who are the dumb-asses who voted for Gregg Jefferies, Doug Jones, and Walt Weiss?
- Please notice that we don’t need revoke anyone’s voting privileges since no one voted for Gary DiSarcina. However, whoever, those of you who voted for Jefferies, Jones, and Weiss are on probation. Another slip up, and we’ll have ourselves a public flogging.
- One more year to go before we can forget about Steve Garvey.
- I don’t know if it will happen, but either Rice, Gossage, Dawson, or Lee Smith needs to go in next year with Gwynn & Ripken (who are shoo-ins). That would still be kind of cool.
- The vote on McGwire is going to be very interesting next year. Two years ago, he was a lock. I’d say his odds are 50/50 at best now, at least for 2007.
I’ll write more later.
